Who the programme serves
A homeowner must own a home in CBRM, need a smoke alarm and be unable to purchase one. Broken or expired alarms may qualify; homes with working alarms should not apply for extra units through this programme.
Renters without a working alarm should contact the landlord or property manager and may also submit the request. The form asks for landlord information so staff can confirm details. Do not describe this as an island-wide giveaway.

Alarm allocation and review
One alarm is provided per floor that has bedrooms. Two bedrooms on one floor receive one alarm under the allocation; bedrooms on two floors receive two. This programme quantity is not a complete building-code alarm-placement rule.
Fire Prevention Officers review requests and assign eligible installations to the appropriate local department. The officers contact eligible applicants. Firefighters install without charge and give home fire-safety information.

Apply and maintain
Use the request form or call 311 for help. Applications close October 31 or earlier when stock runs out, so a submitted request is not a guarantee of approval or immediate visit.
The supplied alarms have a stated ten-year lifespan. Test them monthly, make sure everyone can hear them, maintain batteries as needed and replace according to manufacturer directions. A free installation does not remove the owner/occupant’s ongoing maintenance responsibility.
